These modules are not a certification course for performing either x-rays or coding, but are designed to provide the basics for those who will be becoming certified, and a review to those who are already certified. Module 3 and 6 both include online exams, after all 6 modules are completed an internship is required for certification. After receiving information from the podiatrist concerning the completion of the Internship, the Podiatry Assistant Certificate will be awarded. - Module 1, The Podiatric Medical Assistant Program trains the Assistant in the basics of Aseptic Techniques, demonstrates the use of sterilizers, and explains verifiable sterilization as a positive in the podiatry office. The importance of protecting the staff and patients from emerging, opportunistic and other microorganisms is discussed, micro-trauma and iatrogenic injuries are brought into perspective for podiatry practices as well as contagious viruses and how they can be avoided. It also discusses different types of disinfection and sterilization, their positives and negatives, at-risk clients, and the questions asked in a new client interview, and on the new client sheet. The important cursory foot exam is explained as well as what to look for in this important pre-treatment, pre-physician evaluation by the Assistant. Diseases and disorders of the skin are taught, as well as precautions of working with diabetic and autoimmune clients. The types of and appearance of cancers of the foot are discussed. And much more. This course is the very basis of the information in this program and provides a good start for the student Podiatry Assistant.
- Module 2. Office Emergencies and Disaster Training, provides basic information for the causes of and appropriate responses to emergencies that may occur in podiatry offices. It is designed to prepare professionals to properly respond to emergencies and to hopefully motivate them to further prepare for potential incidences. It contains training for responses and lists of what to have on hand as a responsible professional in a podiatry office. It will also expose the student to concepts of potential disasters in order to stimulate them to better prepare for the possibilities through recognition of their role in these types of incidents. Emergencies DO happen in podiatry offices – this module is important to properly dealing with them. This module contains Study Questions imbedded to support learning and to aid the student to prepare for the exam. No voice will be heard during the course.
- Podiatric Medical Assistant Module 3 - Podiatry and Biomechanics for the Podiatric Medical AssistantCost: $99.00Module 3, Podiatry and Bio-Mechanics for Podiatric Medical Assistants. This module discusses the structure of the foot and how the body is affected by poor biomechanics and skeletal disorders of the foot. Also, the individual disorders are discussed and how they are treated. Biomechanics is the study of the mechanics of a living body, especially of the forces exerted by muscles and gravity on the skeletal structure. This course focuses on the mechanics of the foot. Every Podiatry Assistant needs to know and understand this information in order to work positively with patients and for the physician. - Module 4, Dermatology, Diseases and Disorders for Podiatry Assistants contains these topics as they are relevant to the foot. The difference between skin of the rest of the body and the skin of the foot is discussed to provide a full understanding by the Podiatry Assistant. Definitions, descriptions including photographs, and treatment of various diseases and disorders are provided. The ten most treated conditions in the podiatry office are included as well as important precautions for working with these clients. How and why these conditions occur is discussed, also. - Module 5, Medical Foot Exam, Curettage and Debridement contains instruction on the performance of many of the most important skills the Podiatric Medical Assistant will perform in the medical office. The foot exam is essential before performing any of the health of the patient, and the Podiatry Assistance pre-Podiatrist evaluation can be very helpful to the Podiatrist in preparing for his or her treatment, and in saving time. The sections on Debridement and Curettage are basic non-invasive services that will be performed on fungal feet and knowledge of these treatments is very important for the PA. Massage is covered because it is different in at-risk patients than for patients with normal health, and is discussed to provide the knowledge for the PA. - Module 6, Coding in the Medical Office, Radiology and Strapping Techniques for the Podiatry Assistant focuses on skills that are important to working in a medical office. It contains introductory information on radiation and on the techniques of taking x-rays safely. It also describes the processing/development of films and how this can influence their quality. Coding, a process important to applying for insurance reimbursement is introduced, providing the basics so the Assistant will be prepared to more easily learn the process of billing in an office. The skill of strapping is also described, a skill that is important to performing as an Assistant to a podiatrist. It can be learned easily and performed by an Assistant.

Working with patients in medical offices requires knowledge of the phases of the healing of wounds and the protocols. This module describes wounds and discusses the types of wounds, their causes, the phases of healing, and the provides photos. Each phase of healing is detailed to support the professional's recognition during evaluations. Abnormal healing is discussed, scarring, and the causes and the factors of successful healing are detailed. Ulcers are high incidence to diabetics so must be discussed as well as their causes and treatment. The protocol for Assessment of wounds is an important knowledge set and is taught for use by the professional.
